Why You're Starving by 10 AM

7:00 — coffee. You feel great. Sharp, awake, on top of it.

10:00 — you'd eat the desk. You're rereading the same email for the third time, you're irritable in a way that has no cause, and you're standing in the kitchen eating something you didn't plan to eat.

Let's be Frank: this isn't a willpower problem. It's an arithmetic problem.

Your coffee gave you a stimulant and roughly zero calories, zero protein and zero fibre. You asked your body to run three hours on a signal with no fuel behind it. The 10 AM crash is the entirely predictable result.


What's actually happening

Caffeine borrows energy. It doesn't create any.

Caffeine doesn't give you energy — it blocks adenosine, the molecule that accumulates through the day and makes you feel tired. The tiredness is still being produced; you just stop receiving the message for a few hours.

It also nudges up adrenaline and cortisol. On a full stomach that's fine. On an empty one, you get an alertness spike with nothing underneath it, and when the caffeine tapers the adenosine that queued up while you weren't listening arrives all at once.

Your cortisol was already peaking anyway

Cortisol naturally peaks in the 30–45 minutes after you wake — that's what gets you vertical. Stacking a large coffee on top of an already-peaking cortisol curve tends to produce the jittery-then-flat pattern people describe as "my coffee stopped working."

And nothing stabilised your blood sugar

This is the part that actually explains the hunger.

Protein and fibre slow gastric emptying and blunt the glucose response of whatever you eat next. Skip breakfast and the first thing you eat — often something quick, often around 10 — hits an empty system and produces a bigger glucose rise, then a bigger fall. That fall is the thing you feel as sudden, urgent hunger and a drop in concentration.

So the 10 AM crash isn't really about 10 AM. It was set up at 7.


What the research shows about fixing it

Here's the study that matters most, because it used the exact amount of protein we're talking about — not 40 grams in a shake, just 10.

Neeland, Tsintzas, Ahrén and colleagues (2025), published in Obesity Pillars (PMID 40521305), gave 18 adults 10 g of whey protein 15 minutes before breakfast and lunch for four days.

Two findings:

  • Ad-libitum lunch intake fell 9.4% — about 67 fewer calories, without anyone being told to eat less (p = 0.048).
  • Two-hour glucose response after breakfast fell 39.3% (p = 0.0047).

Ten grams. Fifteen minutes ahead of the meal. That's a small intervention with a measurable effect on both how much people ate and how their blood sugar behaved.

Worth a caveat we'd rather give you than hide: the trial used a whey protein microgel drink, and ours is a whey concentrate. Same protein, different processing.


What actually helps

Put protein in the first thing you drink. This is the highest-leverage change because it requires no new habit — you're already making coffee. You're just changing what's in the cup.

Eat something, even small. If a full breakfast isn't happening, 15–20 g of protein in any form beats nothing by a wide margin.

Don't lead with caffeine on a completely empty stomach if you're prone to jitters. Even a short delay helps, and pairing caffeine with L-theanine changes the character of the alertness — more on that here.

Watch the order. Protein and fibre before carbohydrate in a meal produces a lower glucose response than the reverse. It's a free change.

Stop blaming the 10 AM you. She's responding correctly to a morning that was set up to fail three hours earlier.
