Whey, Clear Whey or Collagen? What the Differences Mean

"20 g of protein" on the front of a pack is not one thing. Depending on the source, those 20 grams can do substantially different jobs in your body — and one popular source is doing far less of the job most people think they're buying.

Here's the difference, in the two terms that actually matter.


The two things that determine protein quality

Complete vs incomplete

There are nine essential amino acids — the ones your body can't make, so you have to eat them. A complete protein contains all nine in useful amounts. An incomplete one is missing or low in at least one.

Miss one and you've capped what your body can build, no matter how much total protein arrives. It's like having every part for a chair except the legs.

The leucine threshold

Of the nine, one does something special. Leucine doesn't just supply material — it acts as a signal, triggering the mTOR pathway that switches on muscle protein synthesis.

There appears to be a threshold: roughly 2.5–3 g of leucine in a single serving to maximally flip that switch. Below it you get a weaker response even if total protein looks adequate.

So the question isn't only "how many grams" but "how many grams of the right amino acids, and is there enough leucine to trigger the response."


The sources

Whey concentrate

The most-studied protein in sports nutrition, and the reference point everything else gets measured against.

Complete, high in leucine, rapidly digested with a fast rise in blood amino acids. Typically 70–80% protein by weight, with the remainder some lactose and fat — that residual is what gives it a fuller mouthfeel and a creamier texture.

Good for: general use, muscle protein synthesis, anything where texture matters. Watch: the small lactose content if you're sensitive.

Whey isolate

Whey filtered further — typically 90%+ protein, with most lactose and fat removed.

More protein per gram, virtually no lactose, and it mixes thinner. The trade-off is texture: less body, and a thinner mouthfeel in drinks. It also costs more.

Good for: lactose sensitivity, lowest calories per gram of protein. Watch: it's a refinement, not an upgrade. The muscle-building difference versus concentrate is small for most people.

Clear whey

Whey isolate processed to stay clear and light in acidic liquids, so it behaves like a juice or squash rather than a milkshake.

The protein is the same — it's an isolate. What's different is the format and the acidic pH it's designed for.

Good for: people who dislike creamy textures; fruit-flavoured drinks. Watch: in coffee it's a poor match. Clear whey is engineered for a tart, fruity profile, and that works against coffee rather than with it.

Casein

The other milk protein. Forms a gel in the stomach and digests slowly over hours.

Good for: overnight, prolonged satiety. Watch: it thickens dramatically in liquid, which makes it difficult in a cold drink.

Plant proteins

Pea, rice, soy, hemp. Soy is complete. Pea is low in methionine; rice is low in lysine — which is why they're so often blended, since together they cover each other.

Generally lower in leucine than whey, so the effective dose is higher — often cited as needing roughly 25–30% more to produce a comparable response.

Good for: vegan diets, dairy avoidance. Watch: check for a blend rather than a single source, and expect a slightly gritty texture.

Collagen — the one that isn't what people think

This needs its own treatment because collagen is marketed heavily as a protein and it is the weakest option on both measures above.

Collagen is an incomplete protein. It contains no tryptophan at all — one of the nine essential amino acids. By definition that makes it incomplete.

It is also very low in leucine. So it doesn't meaningfully trigger muscle protein synthesis. Studies comparing collagen against whey for muscle outcomes consistently favour whey, and it isn't close.

What collagen is disproportionately rich in is glycine, proline and hydroxyproline — the amino acids that make up collagen itself. There's a legitimate and separate body of research on collagen peptides for skin elasticity and joint comfort, and that's a real conversation.

But if your goal is protein — satiety, muscle, hitting a daily target — collagen is the wrong tool. Twenty grams of collagen and twenty grams of whey are not interchangeable, even though both say 20 g on the front.

This matters in coffee particularly, because collagen is popular in coffee formats: it's flavourless and dissolves beautifully. Those are real advantages. They're just not nutritional ones.

Frequently asked questions

Is collagen a complete protein? No. It contains no tryptophan, one of the nine essential amino acids, and is very low in leucine.

Does collagen count toward daily protein? It contributes amino acids, but it won't support muscle protein synthesis the way a complete protein does. Don't count it as equivalent.

Whey concentrate or isolate? Isolate has more protein per gram and almost no lactose. Concentrate tastes creamier and costs less. For most people the difference in outcomes is small.

Is clear whey better? It's the same protein in a different format. Better if you want a light, juice-like drink; worse in coffee.

Can vegans get the same results? Yes, with blended sources and somewhat higher total intake to account for lower leucine.

Which protein is best in coffee? Whey concentrate, generally — it handles the temperature and acidity reasonably and the residual fat gives the drink body. Clear whey is designed for the opposite kind of drink.
